Space Saving At Work: Bringing Organization & Style To Your Office Space

Written by our partner – CsnStores.com

It’s not easy being organized. Super organized people are typically pegged as obsessive compulsive, which may or may not be true in most cases. While there is a certain amount of compulsion required to be organized, you don’t have to get carried away. Organization does not mean alphabetizing and color coding every single file folder in your possession. No, that would just be crazy! Who has time for that? All you need is a few space saving pieces of office furniture and some storage containers of some kind. Here are some helpful tips on organizing your office space or cubicle in a non-obsessive way. Sit back in your office chair and learn how you can become more productive with a few less things on your desk!

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

When it comes to organizing your work space, it’s a good idea to discard anything and everything that you’re not using. Papers have the tendency to stack up on your desk…papers that you have no intention of ever referencing again. You should sift through your notes and other pamphlets, reports and miscellaneous papers at least once a month, once a week would be even better. Anything you don’t need anymore – recycle it! Recycling not only helps to eliminate senseless clutter from your desktop, it lends to an overall good feeling, knowing that you are helping the environment! Remember to remove any staples or paper clips as these cannot be recycled.

File It Away

Now that you’ve recycled all of the unimportant papers on that formerly lived on your desk; it’s time to file them away in your drawer. Don’t just throw them in, though. While it’s great if your desktop looks neat and pristine, but if your drawers are messy and disorganized then you lose! If your desk drawers aren’t equipped to accommodate hanging file folders, purchase an in drawer hanging file folder rack of some sort. Hanging file folders are great for keeping organized. They come with tabs and labels so you can keep your files straight. If you don’t want to go for the hanging file folder option then buy one of those open top A – Z expanding file folders and slip it into your big desk drawer. There are tons of desk drawer organization options for you to consider. If you have a bit more space to work with you could invest in a portable filing cabinet.

Compartmentalize

Everything should have its space. Now, I know this sounds like we’re inching closer into “OCD” territory, but all I’m saying is the more things you have lying around on your desk, the more unorganized and cluttered it looks! At the very least, get a pen & pencil holder of some kind to house all of your writing utensils and a couple of horizontal, stackable filing trays to use for papers that you are currently using or reference on a daily basis. If you’re lucky enough to have a desk with built in desktop storage, definitely take advantage of it! Don’t go overboard with the compartmentalization though. If your desktop is loaded with organizers and containers, it’s bound to look cluttered!

Sitting Pretty

If you’ve spent any amount of time in an office, then you know how uncomfortable the office chairs tend to be. Unless you are an executive, you’re most likely sitting in a very basic office chair. Even if you don’t plan on staying at your current place of employment indefinitely, purchasing your own, ergonomically-designed office chair is a wise idea and a good investment. The Herman Miller Aeron Chair is the cream of the crop when it comes to comfortable, stylish office chairs. Designed with mostly recycled materials and available with a variety of fabric options, the Aeron supports your lower back and helps to improve posture! There’s also an Aeron drafting chair perfect for artists and architects! No doubt, Aeron chairs are pretty expensive. At the very least, consider getting some sort of a back support cushion or pillow to make sitting down all day long a little more comfortable.

Remember

When it comes to saving space in a stylish way, you don’t have to get too elaborate or too crazy. As long as you implement and maintain some sort of basic organization your life will become immediately less stressful and your productivity will most likely increase.
